I moved to Madison from California over two years ago to pursue my PhD in Philosophy. I live by Inner Fire, and I was always intrigued by the friendly, happy, sweaty faces I would see come in and out of their doors. Being physically active has always been important to me as I find it very therapeutic to push myself, see my increased strength, and “sweat out” the stresses of the day. I enjoyed doing yoga at home from time to time, but I never viewed it as challenging as weight lifting or cardio. (Little did I know!)
Earlier this year, I experienced a life-altering breakup that left me feeling alone and lost in this new city. I wanted to challenge myself to join a community, and I needed something that would distract me — at least momentarily— from the pain I was going through. In July 2022, I decided to take the plunge and signed up for an Intro Month trial at Inner Fire.
It was love at first sweat! The first class I took was Hot Yoga 75 with Karen (who was so helpful and encouraging!), and it proved to me that yoga is just as challenging as my other beloved forms of exercise. I love the heat (being a SoCal girl) and the way the class forces me to be present, mindful, and in tune with my body. My favorite class is probably Inner Fire Flow 75 (I always look forward to my Sunday class with Erin!) as I love the combination of the fun music and energetic atmosphere from my fellow yogis. So far, I’ve gone to over 50 classes in a little over three months, and I’ve loved every one!
I am so grateful that the Inner Fire Community welcomed me with open arms. Not only have I found the sense of community I was looking for, but yoga is now a mainstay in my fitness routine. I have seen improvements in my flexibility, strength, and (most importantly) patience and acceptance with myself. My favorite part of every class is the moment set aside for each yogi to dedicate her practice with a chosen mantra. It is something so simple but effective in helping me practice mindfulness.
